The Department of Nursing at Somerset
Medical Center is dedicated to providing superior patient
care, innovation, collegiality and leadership in a culturally sensitive
environment.
As part of this ongoing mission, the medical center recently was
named to an elite group of 68 hospitals nationwide chosen to participate in a
two-year project to improve patient care. The initiative,
known as Transforming Care at the Bedside, or TCAB, is facilitated by The American
Organization of Nurse Executives and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation. The initiative enables and encourages hospitals to share best
practices.
Through the program, all staff are encouraged to voice ways to
improve care. Each idea is analyzed by a committee and either accepted, adapted
or aborted. The goal is to pilot one new initiative per month.
Several ideas are already in effect. Nurses
on pilot units now carry cell phones, and patients are encouraged to
call whenever they need assistance. A cart of amenities, such as lotion, soap
and other toiletries, is now available on each of the units to help patients
feel more “at home.”
